Can this package be updated to the latest version available here: https://github.com/ncbi/sra-tools/
The version available through ubuntu packages is more than a year old.

In addition you have to take into account that Ubuntu is copying packages from Debian (to avoid double packaging work) and also Debian does not have version 3.0.0 yet. Debian has to update their package and only then Ubuntu will follow suit.

Updating it to the newest version in the next Ubuntu release would have been fine but per your second comment, Debian needs to update it first. I wonder what their update cycle is. For now, we can close this though.
