possible that data in Libre Office files is lost?

Asked by vfmla

Hello all,

it seems to me that some of my works saved in libre office spreadsheets is lost. I am not totally sure that this is the case, except in one file, where I am pretty certain that I made some recent additions to the file and I don't see these. in other files, there are also some lines that seem to be missing.
I am working on multiple spreadsheets and it is not easy to tell for sure.

from your experiences, is it possible? did this already happen to you?
if this is a known problem, is there a way to revert to the earlier state of a file? (I tried versions option, but this seems to help only for the future)

thank you so much for your assistance!
Best greets,

Dear Andrew,

thank you very much for your help.

after my question above, I found luckily recent versions of my files still on my computer, and by comparing files saw that almost all latest updates were not saved (new cells in a sheet or a new sheet). I could paste in the missing parts from the earlier versions, and fix the problem.

However I feel the need to know why this happened, to avoid any possibly irrecoverable data loss next time.
I might have thought I forgot to save updates while I am working on many spreadsheets on a constant basis, however I attend to saving them every time after a change, which I'm pretty sure I did last time, too.
and having had this happen to most or all updated files makes me think some error had occured while saving. yet I do not know whether this originated from libre office, the OS..(or the hard drive?)

hence I asked if there are such known bugs/failures from before.

else the only solution seems to me now, since I do not want to revert to any windows software, to be more wary while backing up files.

heartily thanks again for your help.
Best greets,

I suggest you review your backup regime. Not sure otherwise. You could post on the libre/openoffice forum.

thank you again andrew! I'm applying a tighter backup now. hope it was not something else.
