Update of libewf

Asked by Niels van Tongeren

Dear madam, sir,

The current version of the libewf package is quite old. I recently encountered a problem with it where a forensic image mount failed because it consisted of too many segments. This was solved in a later version (I used 20230219-1).

Do I need to create a issue/bug report for this or is an update of the package planned in the near future?

Kind regards,
Niels

Manfred Hampl suggests this article as an answer to your question:

If there is a weakness in the package that prevents its function, then please create a bug report.

Where do you find version 20230219-1 ?

You have to be aware that Ubuntu is copying packages from Debian, and also in Debian there is only version 20171104-1 of libewf available, see https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/libewf The "homepage" link in Debian points to https://github.com/libyal/libewf-legacy and there the newest release is named 20140814

Somewhat confusing.

I guess I just found an explanation for the different versions numbers:

There is https://github.com/libyal/libewf-legacy/releases (with version 20140814)
and also https://github.com/libyal/libewf/releases (with version 20230212)

I do not know how these are related.

I suggest you report a bug. If the bug and security fixes are significant then the package will be updated sooner rather than later (or if the version is no longer supported)

You have to be aware that Ubuntu is copying packages from Debian (to avoid double packaging work) and also in Debian the newest version that has been packages is 20171104-1 (and that one only in "experimental"), see https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/libewf
I suggest that you also create a bug report in the Debian bug tracker, preferably adding a link to the official source (wherever that currently is).

Can you help with this problem?
