Cisco Anyconnect VPN client cannot connect to internet

Asked by Robert Farley

I use sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade every day to keep Ubuntu 22.04 LTS up to date. Since performing these tasks on April 18, the Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client cannot connect to the internet to establish a VPN to my remote server. The error message is, "The service provider in your current location is restricting access to the internet. You need to log on with your service provider before you can establish a VPN session. You can try this by visiting any website with your browser."

The problem is not the service provider, since I can establish a VPN session with this client software using an iMac from the same location. The internet service provider (AT&T) cannot find any problem with my service, and visiting websites does not fix the problem.

Any suggestions for overcoming this problem are greatly appreciated.

Robert

Are you able to login to your VPN ? [Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client]
The connection through Cisco to your ISP would have to be connected to establish a VPN session.

Yes, the client recognizes me, and automatically chooses the correct server. I don’t manually login.

Also, it was pointed out to me earlier today that I’m using the wrong Ubuntu group for this problem, and so I will be moving my question to the Ubuntu community support or Ubuntu forums once I figure out which is the correct one. Thanks for replying to me earlier today.

You could try logging out of Ubuntu ->
On the login page on the lower right corner - click on the gear -
Change from Ubuntu to Ubuntu on Xorg, Log back in.

Thanks for the suggestion, Bernard, but I don’t see any option to login to Ubuntu on Xorg. My login page does not show a gear on the login page, and logging out does not bring up that option. I cannot find that option in Ubuntu Settings either.

Hint: The gear icon appears only after clicking your user name, when the password box is shown.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to helping me solve this problem. It turns out that the host server had updated the certificates and this was causing connection issues with linux systems. I was able to resolve the problem by editing the ca-certificates.conf file and updating the certificates.
